SRV-1 Mobile Surveillance Robot

Reborg-Q Security System

With surveillance robots, a reliable security system is an old idea of science fiction books, but of course, the concept, it is the reality. The Japanese firm Sohgo Security Services (ALSOK) announced that it is the creation of a semi-autonomous security system based on the interaction between robots and humans.

The Q-Reborg robot can be programmed so that during patrols or remotely via a joystick. Each robot is equipped with four cameras on the head and shoulders, so they are able to recognized human, water or fire, leaks and a report to a single space in which human security is under the video to determine the risk that each situation.

Alright, if your company is having a hard time to find a reliable secretary or assistant why not just hire a robot instead? That is exactly what Ubiquitous Exchange, an organization based in Tokyo, is offering. For an hourly wage you can hire Ubiko, a robot that is able to welcome visitors, answer questions and carry objects around.

What is the hourly wage, though? Grab your seat, because the little robot goes for $445 an hour. I mean, for that price I would at least expect the gizmo to do the coffee and clean the floor… I don’t know about your country but here in Brazil you can hire two complete footbal teams for that price, supporters included.

Robot adapts to surrounding environment

Scientists from the University of Vermont and from the Cornell University have announced a new robot that is able to study the surrounding environment, re-adapt to it and even heal itself in the case of unexpected damage. As you can imagine those capabilities could prove really useful for missions on unknown or dangerous territory.

The process is not that simple. Apparently the robot is able to create a virtual model of itself on the internal computer that it carries. Every movement is then updated into the model so that the computer will be predict future actions and even compensate for specific malfunctions.

One of the authors of the study commented that “Most robots have a fixed model laboriously designed by human engineers (…) we showed, for the first time, how the model can emerge within the robot. It makes robots adaptive at a new level, because they can be given a task without requiring a model. It opens the door to a new level of machine cognition and sheds light on the age-old question of machine consciousness, which is all about internal models.”

The robot is called Starfish even though it has four legs instead of five as the animal. The aim of the researchers was to create something similar to live beings. If a human, for example, hurts an arm or a leg he will consequently adapt to the new situation and change the way he handle objects or the way he walks around. Traditional robots, on the other hand, are programmed under a definite code which does not change whatsoever.

Robocoaster gives you thrills

Industrial robot manufacturer Kuka has teamed up with Primal Rides, the Canadian amusement park ride designer in order to developed theme rides that are based on a robotic Kuka arm. Known as the Robocoaster, this is a pretty interesting piece of news as it can be safely said that the Robocoaster is the only rollercoaster in the world that will bring its riders for a wild, wild ride, with the ultimate objective – to make its riders puke.

The Robocoaster comes with 6 degrees of freedom and is capable of lifting over a thousand pounds (that is tipping the scales at half a ton) out to a 3.3 meter reach.

R100 Personal Robot

To make the most of the Robot category here at Coolest Gadgets and reach the tenth position, I present you the R100 Personal Robot – man’s best friend after beer, dogs, women. It is a strange looking robot made by the famous IT company – NEC.

I’m wondering if the persons in charge of building the R100 focused so much in giving the robot plenty of features that they forgot to make it look good and stylish in terms of colors. What I mean is that a blue, red and yellow stripe is not a good option – maybe that is why they accepted some original color scheme ideas. In terms of design and shape, it is understandable the decision to make it simple since it is easier to make it move around.

Mr. Robot Head

If you grew up a young Padawan on Tattooine you are probably used to hanging out with and fixing droids of all kinds. You would also be well aware of the consequences of asking Wookies to help with the fixing. Here at ThinkGeek, we love robots just as much as we love droids, and we don’t let Wookies near either, especially our newest addition – Mr. Robot Head. It’s a strangely fascinating and eco-friendly puzzle that will challenge kid’s dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Mr. Robot Head is electronic, but does not require batteries. It is powered with a handle in the back that has wind-up action. The object of the puzzle is to get the looped wand from one side of the wires on top of Mr. Robot Head to the other without touching the wire itself. When the wand touches the tantalizingly coiled wire, the robot’s LED eyes will madly flash and Mr. Robot Head will make strange noises. Make no buzz about it; Mr. Robot Head is a fun challenge for your kids, Wookie or otherwise.
